Centre for Development Studies
The Centre for Development Studies (CDS) at the University of Glasgow is a leading institution in the UK for postgraduate study and research in the area of development studies. CDS is based in the Department of Economics but a number of other departments in the Faculty of Law, Business and Social Sciences contribute to our Masters programmes in Development Economics and Finance. Collaborating departments include Accounting and Finance, Management, Central and Eastern European Studies, Economic and Social History, Law, Politics, Sociology, Anthropology and Applied Social Sciences, and Urban Studies.

We offer a range of integrated taught Masters programmes providing specialist postgraduate training in a variety of areas of contemporary concern, designed to meet the needs of those involved with and interested in problems and policies in developing countries. It is a defining characteristic of our courses that, while they are at the research frontier, they devote special attention to the policy/practical implications of the different theories, giving them a clear applied flavour.

Since our establishment in 1983, over 1,000 students have graduated from the Centre for Development Studies and proceeded to successful careers in international organisations, government ministries, academia and research institutions, non-governmental organisations, banks and other financial institutions, etc. In 2008-09, 103 students have enrolled in our programmes.

The University of Glasgow has won second place in the Times Higher Awards for Best International Student Support; and third place in the Times Higher Awards for Best Student Experience and was the Sunday Times Scottish University of the Year in 2007/08. Both the Department of Economics, in which the Centre is based, and University are ranked in the top 20 UK universities/ Economics departments by the Independent newspaper's 2009 Complete University Guide, the Times' 2009 Good University Guide and the Guardian's 2009 University Guide. The University is listed in the top 100 Universities in the world (Times Higher World University Rankings 2008). RAE 2008 ranks all research in the Department as being of international quality: 75% is considered to be world-leading and internationally excellent
